HAYSVILLE, Kan. (KSNW) — We are officially one week from the start of the high school football season, and our team previews continue this evening with the Campus Colts.

The Colts went 2-7 last season, but with a new coach taking over the program, there’s a lot of hope for a bright future.

“In this first year, we’re just looking to bring an incredible amount of energy,” explained Coach Cody Peabody. “We’re looking to get kids out. We’re looking to give them a positive experience. When I started here, I came in, you know, did the whole. There’s a brand new coach, here’s the meeting. And I told him I a promise to them on three things. I can promise them a positive experience where they can be treated fairly. They’re going to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and I promise them that they won’t be outworked, and they won’t be out-prepared.”

The team also is trying to build the culture through senior leadership.

“We have a leadership team,” said senior safety Lukas White, “and most of us stepped up right away, and some of us said we had to take them out of their show. Bring them out of their comfort zone. But some of the freshmen even have stepped up.”

The key for the players is rebuilding the confidence needed to compete in a very tough AVCTL Division 1. Seniors we spoke to, though, say they’re excited to get this season started and play the role of underdogs, which could shock some of the teams they face.

“It’s been totally different than last year,” added senior running back Camden Schroeder. “I love the way that Coach Peabody came out here is changing it. He’s changing it for the better. Getting more involved with the community. And he’s more involved with the younger guys than we have been used to. So I like to change.”
