TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – The Shawnee County Parks & Recreation (SCP+R) is inviting the community to a ribbon cutting for Family Park, the first new park in Shawnee County in 50 years.

Family Park will open on Aug. 21 following years of planning and community input. Shawnee County Commissioners approved the Family Park Master Plan back in 2021 with a multi-million dollar price tag. The addition of this park has been under discussion for a decade to provide additional recreation opportunities for locals of all ages.

“We are thrilled to open Family Park, a space designed with the whole community in mind. This park represents our commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Shawnee County by providing accessible recreational spaces for everyone,” said Tim Laurent, Director of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation.

Designs for the park released in 2023 include plans for a playground, pickleball courts and a shelter house. To learn more about the park on the SCP+R’s website, click here .

The ribbon cutting will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 2201 SW Urish Road. Attendees can pick up a complimentary Pineapple Dream soft-serve until 6 p.m. or until supplies run out.
