TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – It’s no secret that sports bars see more business when a big game is on tv, and the NFL is in a league of its own when it comes to this.

The country’s most profitable sports league is kicking off its season Thursday night with an AFC Championship rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, but it’s not just sports better’s who are looking to bring in big money this football season.

“A good month could be anywhere from 28 to 30 thousand dollars in sales of just liquor alone, you know,” Johnny’s Tavern Topeka General Manager, Andrew Fyler said. “A really really good month could be 35 to 40 thousand dollars in liquor alone, and I’d be willing to bet that we’d be on the end of going from that 28 to 30, closer to that 35 to 40.”

As the saying goes: you have to spend money to make money. This is true for the NFL, which according to CBS Sports , made over $12 billion in national revenue last year, or a restaurant like Johnny’s Tavern during football season.

“Our orders through Sysco, we get two orders a week from them,” Fyler said. “We sometimes have to expand to three orders a week just because we’re trying to keep up with what’s going on. So, if our normal Monday and Friday are there, we may have to adjust and do Monday, Thursday and Saturday.”

The NFL will kick off its season this Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7:20 pm on NBC.
