TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Demolition is in progress for a building standing in the way of the Topeka Polk-Quincy Viaduct project.

Work crews are tearing down the old Topeka Foundry & Iron Works (TFI) building located on Kansas Avenue at I-70. This will make way for future construction on the longstanding viaduct project.

The owner of TFI, Jon Haas, told 27 News workers are taking special steps to preserve parts of the almost 100-year-old building for future use. Rather than destroying the structure, work crews are carefully taking apart the building in an effort to salvage steel and old-growth lumber for future projects.

The demolition process is expected to take from seven to 10 days to complete. TFI’s current headquarters in Topeka is at 200 Southwest Jackson Street.
