TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – This weekend, local teens are getting the chance to learn special driving skills that could save a life the next time they’re behind the wheel.

BRAKES is a free teen driving program that provides hands-on training in a controlled environment. Students learn how to protect themselves and their riders in a variety of situations including crash avoidance, distraction and car control.

Organizers say these skills are not normally taught in driver’s education.

“Teaches them something that will help them in the future to avoid accidents, or just increase awareness of them driving they didn’t realize they can do in the car to help protect them and their family,” said Michael Palmer, one of the lead instructors.

The BRAKES driving school will take place in the Stormont Vail Event Center parking lot from Sept. 7-8. Drivers ages 15-19 are welcome as well as parents.
