KANSAS ( KSNT ) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it would be investing, if approved, $35 million to expand renewable energy sources in the Sunflower State.

The USDA announced it was working on the awards process for the Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program on Wednesday, Sept. 25. If given the green light, the program would see the $35 million invested into seven solar facilities in the state. According to the press release from the USDA, the power generated from the investment would be enough to power 3,700 homes.

The communities near the power facilities include Clay Center, Ellinwood, Greensburg, Hillsboro, Marion, Wellington and Winfield.

“Rural electric utilities and power generation are the backbone of Kansas power delivery,” USDA Rural Development Kansas Director Christy Davis said. “When we invest in them, we strengthen Kansas energy security and opportunities in the state.”
