TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – City officials are running out of time to complete multiple road work projects around the Capital City as temperatures start to come down.

Construction on Topeka Boulevard at 21st Street and 27th Street is causing traffic headaches and delays for local drivers. City leaders weighed in on the projects during the monthly city manager and mayor conference.

City Manager Robert Perez and Mayor Mike Padilla commented on the road work during their meeting, saying water line work on 27th Street is slated to wrap up by the start of October. One lane between 21st and 29th Streets will soon be reopened to traffic.

Drivers may find this situation frustrating, especially when considering other city road projects and highway work , the city said there is so much construction work at this time of year because the asphalt plants are only open from March to December. Perez said while these projects are currently on track, they are prepared for possible setbacks.

“We do have contingency plans in place to potentially, cover up and use temporary asphalt or something and then come back again in the spring, to finish the final restoration but as of today we are on track to finish our projects.”

City of Topeka offers free computers to local residents

The City of Topeka wants to encourage people to continue to visit businesses located in and near construction zones. Drivers are also encouraged to follow detours instead of cutting through private property.
