    One arrested for arson after downtown Topeka fire

    TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – One person is now in jail after a Thursday evening fire in Downtown Topeka caused thousands of dollars in damage.

    Just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, crews with the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) were dispatched to a structure fire in the 700 block of Southwest Polk Street, according to a news release from TFD. Crews first to the scene found heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of a multi-unit residential building.

    Crews were able to put out the fire, while containing all of the damage to the area the fire started. After investigating, Topeka police, along with TFD, arrested one individual for one count of aggravated arson. That person was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

    The cause of the fire was determined to be incendiary, according to the news release. The total amount lost was $25,000.
