TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – The capital city is working to create special areas for pollinating bugs in Kansas.

Crews with the City of Topeka have made pollinator habitats around the city. Native wildflowers and grasses from Kansas are providing nourishing food and living spaces for bugs like bees and butterflies.

According to Aaron Grams, a City of Topeka Stormwater Permit Coordinator, crews work every year to increase the plant diversity of these habitats as a way to help these pollinators continue their lifecycle, and help the native plants continue to spread, helping our ecosystem as well.

What family-friendly fall events are happening in NE Kansas?

If you are interested in creating pollinator habitats in your hard, Grams provided the following tips to get you started.

    • You don’t have to go big to help pollinators.  From a few flowers in a pot to a corner of the yard, there are a wide-range of habitat sizes.
    • Plant diversity is important as it can support a wide range of pollinators.
    • Choose flowering species that bloom from early spring to late summer, providing a buffet throughout the season.
    • Group plants together so pollinators can find them easier.
