OLPE, KS ( KSNT ) – A Kansas town is rallying behind a local boy who’s fighting cancer for a second time.

In June, 2024, we introduced you to James Nunley as we celebrated his 10th birthday, and one year of being cancer free. James was just six when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. But a few days ago, he and his family found out the cancer was back.

Within a few hours of learning about James’ diagnosis, Olpe students planned a hamburger feed at the home football game to help raise money for his treatment.

“I had some students that came the very next day and said, What can we do? Which is incredible,” Megan McGuire, Olpe High School teacher said. “That’s what we’re trying to teach, especially in that leadership and civic engagement class is be a doer and be part of something bigger than yourself. So we’re trying to do that for James.”

In addition to raising money, the students in the crowd have all coordinated to wear black along with orange bandanas to show their support for James.
