KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. for an abduction of a 9-month-old boy, and KCPD says as of 12:45 p.m., the boy was found safe, and police found the woman and suspected vehicle they were looking for.
Officers were searching for a white 2015 Nissan Rogue with Kansas plates that had last been seen at 40th Street and Hedges Avenue.
Missouri Highway Patrol said 9-month-old Armon Calvin was taken by Traci Calvin. According to MSHP, Traci Calvin threatened to kill the boy.
The baby’s grandmother told police her daughter threatened to kill the child. Patrol officers found Traci Calvin, 24, about an hour after the alert was issued. A Kansas City Police spokesperson said Calvin’s mother told police her daughter had threatened to kill her own son, nine-month-old Armon Calvin.
KCPD Sgt. Jacob Becchina said Traci Calvin is now behind bars. Police officers spotted her around 12:45 p.m. in the Ruskin Heights area of south Kansas City.
The baby wasn’t in the car with Calvin, and she told officers the baby was safe with a relative at another location. The original call for help came from the grandmother at a residence near 40th and Hedges in east Kansas City.
“Even if you don’t have kids, it touches home because kids are a blessing. In my eyes, kids are a blessing. You don’t want that to happen to any child,” Avan Burkes, who owns property off Hedges Avenue, said.
Sgt. Becchìna said family services will be involved in the case going forward, working to find a safe spot for the baby. Investigators want to know what prompted the mother to make threats against her own child.
“This is a call for help that goes out all across the metro area. The highway patrol coordinates that. This is something that every police officer who’s out there in the metro a”rea that’s on duty, their ears perk up when they hear that because they know this is a kid who could be in danger. This is the way we want every one of these to end,” Sgt. Becchina said.
Jackson County court records from 2022 show Traci Calvin served 120 days in jail, a sentence related to an armed robbery charge. Police also said she has legal custody of the baby boy. Amber alerts concerning legal guardians are somewhat rare, but Sgt. Becchina explained it was deemed necessary in this case since the child was believed to be in danger.
