Linda Lewis, age 65, of Quitman, TX passed away at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs, TX on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Linda Joyce Lewis was born on December 9, 1958 in Loma Linda, California to William and Nona (McDowell) Lewis. She married Janet Lee Lewis in Oklahoma on October 18, 2014. Linda was a truck driver and pilot car driver for many years.

May 12, 2024 – Bell peppers don’t handle the heat of summer very well, but other sweet peppers as well as hot peppers don’t seem to be affected!. There are already 1,000 gigatons of carbon in the atmosphere contributing to global warming. If we went to zero carbon emission today, 1,000 gigatons would still warm our planet for 100s, if not 1,000s of years unless reduced. It’s estimated that planting one billion trees could pull enough carbon from the atmosphere to keep global warming from falling over the edge in 2050. The Arbor Foundation has committed to planting 500 million trees by 2030.

Gene Barnett
Welcome Gene Barnett, age 91, passed away on May 10, 2024, at his home in Saltillo, TX. Gene was born July 12, 1932, in New Hope, TX. He was the son of Welcome Earl Barnett and Ollie (Rice) Barnett. Following graduation from Saltillo High School in 1953, Gene married Imogene (White) Barnett. They were married for 70 years. Gene joined the Dallas Police Department in 1956. He was the last living Dallas Police officer to have witnessed President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. In 1965, he joined the Department of Public Safety and retired in 1992 as an Honorary Texas Ranger. Gene’s hobbies included singing with gospel groups including the Kingsmen and Saintsmen. He has been a Mason.
Attempted Theft of High Value Sports Car Results in Arrest of Two Suspects
May 10, 2024 – The investigation continues into the matter of an attempted car theft of a white Porsche from a County Road 4760 residence. Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a concerned neighbor shortly before midnight Thursday. The caller reported suspicious activity occurring at the location. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies made contact with two individuals attempting to jump start a Porsche at the residence. Both subjects were placed into custody and read a Miranda warning. Neither suspect wanted to speak with deputies. What appeared to be brand-new bolt cutters were found in the suspect’s vehicle, and the lock that secured the front gate appeared to be recently cut to gain entry to the property. The Porsche had been removed from the garage and deputies found the vehicle with the keys in the ignition.
