Sulphur Springs City Council Remains Unchanged After Election
May 6, 2024 – Most of the focus for the May 4th elections was on school bonds, but three seats on the Sulphur Springs City Council were on a separate ballot over at City Hall. Two seats were unopposed, with Jay Julian and Harold Nash, Sr. being reelected to their seats without opposition. Place 3 had incumbent Oscar Aguilar fending off challenger Seth McDaniel with Aguilar receiving 65.6% of the 250 votes cast in the low turnout election. Julian, Nash, and Aguilar will retain their seats on the council once the full council has a chance to officially canvas the votes at their next meeting.
School Bonds Pass in Hopkins County
May 6, 2024 – Although the totals remain “unofficial” until approved by their respective boards, both Sulphur Bluff and Sulphur Springs saw their bonds pass with overwhelming success during last Saturday’s election. Both districts achieved exactly 72% “for” and 28% “against” as the final totals came in.

There Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home Chapel with Garry Jordan officiating. CHRISTUS Provides Free Athletic Physical for Sulphur Springs and Surrounding Schools
May 5, 2024 – CHRISTUS Health hosted free student athlete screenings for ten different school districts in Sulphur Springs and surrounding areas on Friday, May 3. More than 1,200 students from (entering) 7th to 11th grade were seen. Fifty staff members volunteered, including physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, and support staff, to make this possible. First Baptist Church generously lent their ROC building for the event. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) require all student-athletes to have a medical history form signed before athletic participation. Athletes undergo an evaluation by a certified health care professional which includes a detailed medical history, orthopedic screening, blood pressure and heart rate screening, and medical physical.

SSISD Voters Approve Bond For New Schools
May 4, 2024 – An overwhelming force of voters came out in favor of the latest bond proposal offered by Sulphur Springs Independent School District. With 72% of voters voting in favor of the $157.15 million bond, the much needed new primary schools will soon become a reality.

Funeral Service for Calvin Ray Cash, age 62, of Sulphur Springs, TX will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Tapp Funeral Home, Sulphur Springs, TX. Serving as pallbearers will be Cameron Horton, Jeremy Hall, Ennis Franklin, Joshua Cash, Ivan Wright and Vincent Davis. Honorary pallbearers will include Robert Franklin, Olan Wyane Nash and Pete Nash. Mr. Cash passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at his home in Sulphur Springs, TX.

Funeral service for Charles King, age 98, of Dallas, TX will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Murray Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs, TX with Jeff Gravens officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Douglas Jones, Gavin Fields, Bill Algood, Daniel Algood, Don Algood, Stephen Algood, Levi Algood, and Glenn King serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held one hour prior at 9:30 a.m. Mr. King passed away at his home in Dallas, TX on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
Pine Forest Disturbance Call Leads to Murder Charges
May 3, 2024 – A disturbance call in Pine Forest at 1:06am early Friday morning brought Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputies to a Pine Forest address on FM 269. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a decease white male identified as Jimmy Holmes, a 69-year-old white male. Witnesses on the scene identified Brandon Murray, a 49-year-old white male as the perpetrator. Murray was still on the scene of the homicide, and after further investigation, was arrested and booked into the Hopkins County Jail on murder charges. Justice of the Peace Brad Cummings pronounced the deceased at 1:30am Friday morning.

May 2, 2024 – The dream and hope of the Sulphur Springs community for a safe, comfortable, and attractive facility for the members of the Senior Community to gather and engage each other took one giant leap closer to realty with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the almost complete facility on May 1, 2024. Members from all walks of life gathered in the new big event room at the Senior Activity Center, located at 301 Oak Avenue in downtown Sulphur Springs, Texas, to hear words of welcome and thanks from key players in the development of this Center.
