Ford's Theatre Historic Site and Museum Reopens

    2021-05-12

Ford's Theater announced its reopening on Wednesday, May 12th. The historic site opened for tours with safety top of mind.

"We are so excited. It's been -- with the exception of five weeks in the fall that we were open -- we basically have been closed for 14 months, and so we're thrilled to be sort of getting back to whatever the new normal is. But the new normal is Ford's Theater reopened! So we're opening today for visitation and we're working on COVID safety protocols," said Ford's Theatre Director, Paul Tetreault.

"Advance reservation tickets have been available. Already today we're completely sold out, and I think we're almost sold out for tomorrow as well. So people should go online and plan their visit!"

Expect some maintenance and construction, but the full museum and historic exhibits are now available for visitors, including a jewel case where visitors can see the gun that John Wilkes Booth used to shoot the 16th President and the booth where Lincoln was watching the play when it happened.

And if you got used to Ford's Theater's excellent virtual programming during its time of closure in the pandemic... don't worry.

"We are excited that we're opening here at Ford's Theater, and we hope that people can come and visit, but for those that can't, there are still a ton of things that are available online, virtually," said Aly Baltrus of the National Park Service.

"They can go to our website, which is www.nps.gov/foth, and there are different videos and clips there, including some virtual programs," she said.

Still, those in DC or visiting this spring and summer were eager for Ford's Theatre's reopening news.

Says Tetreault: "I think we've had a great response to our programs that we've had online or are available on our website and our education programs, but there's nothing like being back in the theater, so we're excited about that."
