Library of Congress Welcomes Visitors Back to Thomas Jefferson Building

Starting July 15, 2021, the Library of Congress Jefferson Building will reopen to visitors with free limited times and ticketed entry on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

From the Neptune Fountain to the Flame of Knowledge, there is much more here than just books -- although this world's largest library has those, too!

When it opened in 1897, the Jefferson Building of the LOC was considered the most beautiful, educational, and interesting building in Washington... and to many it still is, with over 170 million items, impressive exhibits, and stunning Beaux-Arts architecture.

Don't miss the Great Hall, the Gutenberg Bible, or the overlook into the Main Reading Room. Current exhibits to explore within the spectacular Thomas Jefferson Building include: Rosa Parks: In Her Own Words, Shall Not Be Denied: Women Fight For the Vote, Thomas Jefferson’s Library, Exploring the Early Americas, and Mapping a New Nation: Abel Buell’s Map of the United States, 1784.

“We are thrilled to welcome visitors back to the iconic Jefferson Building in July,” said Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden. “We hope that by introducing a free but ticketed experience, we can safely and responsibly begin to share the Library’s great treasures with the American people once again.”

Also -- the Library of Congress' 4th annual "LOC Summer Movies on the Lawn" outdoor film fest is also returning with Thursday night movies this summer. The series of five movies, which showcases iconic films from the Library’s National Film Registry, will be presented on Thursday evenings at sundown between July 8 and Aug. 5 on the north lawn of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, across the street from the U.S. Capitol.
