LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas state officials are putting in an effort to help provide more Safe Haven Baby Boxes around the state with a new grant.

The Arkansas Department of Finance of Administration announced a $250,000 grant program for businesses and organizations to implement a Safe Haven Baby Box. Safe Haven Boxes in Arkansas are used for a parent to surrender their newborn child to an organization installed with the safety device.

City and county hospitals with an emergency room, law enforcement agencies and fire departments are eligible for the grant.

“My administration is committed to supporting mothers and babies, especially in their most vulnerable moments,” Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. “This grant program will provide resources and give struggling new moms safe options that help build a culture of life in Arkansas. I applaud local communities who are investing in this program and partnering with the state.”

State officials said that applications will open in September and the program will remain open on an ongoing basis. DFA Secretary Jim Hudson encouraged organizations across the state to apply for the funding.

“This grant program is one more way Governor Sanders is ensuring the health and safety of Arkansas’ youngest and most vulnerable citizens,” DFA Secretary Jim Hudson said. “We encourage eligible organizations across the state to consider pursuing this funding. The Safe Haven program saves lives, and we are proud to support it.”
