Massive boulder fell on 5 Freeway moments after 5.2 quake; stopped lanes through Grapevine

Several lanes of the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine area were closed for hours Tuesday night when a massive boulder fell on the roadway just moments after a large earthquake struck in Kern County.

The incident on the southbound side of the freeway south of Grapevine Road was reported at 9:11 p.m., just two minutes after the 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit near Bakersfield.

Video showed the boulder blocking two lanes and causing a long backup on the Grapevine.

Caltrans crews were called to the scene and managed to remove the boulder around midnight allowing for all lanes to reopen.

No injuries or damage were reported in the incident.

California Highway Patrol officials urged motorists to use caution Wednesday morning and be on the lookout for any tree branches, rocks or debris that may still be on the roadway.

The earthquake, which was followed by dozens of aftershocks, struck southwest of Lamont in a remote area near the Kern lakebed and was felt as far north as Fresno, to the east in the Inland Empire and south as far as San Diego.
