A 35-year-old man allegedly involved in a fatal shooting in San Bernardino County earlier this month was apprehended late last week in Arizona, officials announced Monday.

Authorities learned about the deadly incident on Sept. 2 after responding to reports of a shooting at around 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of Klicktat Avenue and Quinnault Road in Apple Valley, a press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated.

When deputies arrived at the location, they found the victim, identified as 39-year-old Oro Grande resident Jonathan Cuevas suffering from a gunshot wound inside of a vehicle.

The 39-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he was later declared dead.

Investigators with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division assumed the case and determined Cuevas had arrived at the location to pick up a friend when he was reportedly shot to death by man identified as Apple Valley resident Anthony Lopez.

Authorities said that Lopez fled the scene of the shooting before deputies arrived.

A little less than a week later, on Sept. 6, investigators with United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Lopez at about 7 p.m. in Bullhead, Arizona.

“Lopez was arrested without incident and booked into the Mohave County Jail in Arizona, where he awaits extradition,” authorities said.

No information about a possible motive in the fatal shooting was provided, nor did authorities say whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to contact San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Detail at 909-890-4904. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact the Wetip Hotline at 800-782-7463.
