Officers responding to a shooting that left one victim dead in North Hollywood opened fire and fatally wounded the suspect after he hid in a parking garage and allegedly pointed a gun at police Monday morning.

Los Angeles police officers initially responded to a shooting call near Victory Boulevard and Laurel Canyon Boulevard shortly around 5 a.m.

An unidentified victim was found with a gunshot wound inside a blue SUV at the location. That victim was pronounced dead, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Meghan Aguilar said.

Officers then spotted the suspect while investigating the crime scene.

“They saw the suspect. He was armed with a handgun. He pointed that handgun at the officers, at which time they got out of their vehicle and there was an officer-involved shooting,” Aguilar said.

The suspect then fled into a nearby parking structure, coming out at one point on the west side of the garage and officer again opened fire, Aguilar said.

“The suspect ran back into that parking structure, tried to come out on the north, still armed, where a third officer-involved shooting occurred,” Aguilar said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was later pronounced dead inside the parking structure. No officers were injured in the incident.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the suspect fired any rounds at officers.

Laurel Canyon Boulevard was closed between Victory Boulevard and Hamlin Street during the investigation. Victory Boulevard was blocked between Laurel Canyon Boulevard and the 170 Freeway.

The 170 Freeway was also closed for a short time Monday morning but has reopened.
