Two 17-year-olds led a high-speed police chase that ended in a rollover crash on Sunday in Camarillo, leaving one of the teens critically injured.

The chase started when an investigation of stolen alcohol and other goods led deputies to the teens’ car as it matched the suspect vehicle description.

The theft was reported around 11:42 p.m. on Saturday at the CVS on Carmen Drive. A Sheriff’s Sergeant found and tried to stop the two teens in their car around 12:02 a.m. Sunday.

When the traffic stop was initiated, the sergeant suspected the driver was possibly driving under the influence, noting he had no headlights on and did not initially yield.

Authorities said the teens briefly yielded, but then fled the area at a high rate of speed – causing the initiation of a car chase.

The 17-year-old driver lost control of the car while speeding on northbound Highway 101 near Carmen Drive.

They crashed into the center median guard rail and rolled and flipped multiple times. No other vehicles were hit, but the crash and investigation closed down the highway until around 6 a.m.

The passenger climbed out of the car and surrendered, but the driver was ejected during the crash and found with critical injuries. Both teens were transported to the Ventura County Medical Center.

Authorities said the passenger was treated and released, but the driver was later taken to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he remains in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. The Ventura Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses any information to contact Detective Riordan at 805-388-5120.
