Nothing makes Southern Californians more jealous than hearing others around the world brag about their walkable cities.

Everybody knows downtown Los Angeles and San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, but aside from the big cities what other places in the Southland have vibrant, walkable downtown areas? World Atlas put together a list of eight smaller cities with downtowns worth exploring.

    Claremont

Located not too far from Los Angeles, Claremont is no stranger to “hidden gem” lists in California. Its downtown area, full of brainy students that belong to the prestigious Claremont Colleges, has the usual scene with fun restaurants and watering holes but also contains a stellar art museum and the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.

    Laguna Beach

Of all the towns on this list, this is one of the few with an ocean view. You can sip on a coffee while gazing at the Pacific Ocean, what else could you ever need? With scenic trails leading to the coastline and art galleries galore, there’s plenty to do in this Orange County staple.

    Ojai

Tucked away in the Topatopa Mountains of Ventura County, Ojai is the spot to hit for a true “small town” feel. There are plenty of unique food options around town and the Ojai Certified Farmers Market is the staple here. If you’re searching for a tight-knit community that doesn’t feel like Southern California, Ojai is your place.

    Solana Beach

Back to the beach! Solana Beach, with Pacific Coast Highway running down the middle, is a city with a dense shopping scene. Check out the Cedros Avenue Design District to grab a new outfit and then stop by a brewery for lunch. If you’re looking for a small-town feel in San Diego County, it’s hard to beat this one.

    Encinitas

Speaking of San Diego County, Encinitas is perhaps its worst-kept secret. The city is famous for its surf scene, and even the downtown strip has that chill, laid-back feel. There are countless places to drink and grab some food, and when you’re sick of the sidewalks, the beach is a short trip away.

    San Clemente

Another town that’s known for its surfing culture, San Clemente is a relaxing spot by the water. Its pier is a great place to catch a sunset view, and the rest of the downtown area has something to offer for everyone, whether that’s upscale shopping and dining or something a little more low-key.

    Redlands

Finally, some representation for the Inland Empire. Redlands, like much of its region, serves as the middleman of Southern California. You can pass through it on your way to the forests of San Bernardino County or on your way to the big city in L.A. Its downtown area is full of breweries, antique shops and a little bit of everything. You can even catch an outdoor concert at the famed Redlands Bowl.

    San Juan Capistrano

If California history is more your thing, it’s impossible to beat San Juan Capistrano. The beautiful architecture dating from the city’s days as a Spanish mission town is still standing, and the mission is a treat to visit. There’s plenty of great food around town and if you love nature and animals, the Swallows Festival is a must-visit.
