Multiple lanes will be closed overnight through this week as construction crews continue working on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills.

Traffic could be squeezed down to one lane on either side of the highway during the overnight work, Caltrans says.

Crews are in the process of constructing sound walls and concrete barriers on the crossing above traffic, as well as removing temporary supports from the structure.

Will animals use California’s wildlife crossings?

This current work has been ongoing since last Friday, with a break over the weekend, and will continue through this Friday.

Work is being done during the daylight, with the following closures in place in the evening:

    • After 10 p.m.: Two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes may be closed on Highway 101 in the construction area, leaving two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes open for traffic.
    • After 11 p.m.: A third southbound lane may be closed, leaving one lane open for southbound traffic.
    • After 11:59 p.m.: A third northbound lane may be closed, leaving one lane open for northbound traffic.
    • Lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the next morning.
    • The Northbound 101 Liberty Canyon On-Ramp and the Southbound 101 Liberty Canyon Off-Ramp may be closed after 7 p.m. and will be open by 6 a.m. the next morning.

Caltrans says the schedule and planned closures are subject to change due to weather or other “operational reasons.”

The latest closure information can be found on the Caltrans QuickMap website .

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is located near Liberty Canyon Road and will be the largest wildlife crossing ever constructed, stretching over 200 feet long and 165 feet wide across the roadway.

The purpose of the wildlife crossing is to connect two natural landscapes that have long been bisected by one of the nation’s busiest highways.

Crews broke ground on the project in spring 2022; California officials say it’s projected to open by early 2026 .

I’m just a lay person, but that bridge looks way overbuilt for wildlife. It would seem far more practical to make a smaller version that could be built in many more locations.

Hope everyone in Malibu doesn’t end up killing these large cats because they are building a highway for them to go right into Malibu and the Santa Monica mountains and eat peoples livestock! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
