LAPD officer charged with assaulting suspect during 2023 domestic violence call

A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with assault connected to the arrest of a domestic violence suspect in 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on May 29, when LAPD Officer Garo Garabedian responded with other officers to a call at a residence in Los Angeles.

“While arresting a male suspect, Garabedian allegedly assaulted him resulting in serious injuries,” the DA’s Office stated in a news release.

Garabedian, 42, was charged on Tuesday with two felony counts of assault under the color of authority.

“As law enforcement officers, those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting our community must be held to the highest of standards of integrity and accountability,” said L.A. District Attorney George Gascón. “Violating this trust undermines both public safety and the principles of justice that officers have sworn to uphold. No one is above the law, and we will pursue justice in this case to maintain the public’s faith in those who serve and protect.”

Garabedian’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 21. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum of six years and eight months in prison.
