Police in Arcadia have launched an investigation after a camera camouflaged to look like shrubbery was found outside a home.

The camera was discovered Tuesday morning by a homeowner who called police after discovering the device hidden in the bushes in front of their house.

Officers from the Arcadia Police Department responded to the home near the intersection of Highland Oaks Drive and Virginia Avenue around 8 a.m.

Officials said the camera appeared to have fallen from a spot where it would’ve had a clear view to record other houses in the neighborhood.

    Authorities say it’s a well-known scheme.

“Camouflaged cameras are a tactic being used in residential burglaries,” police said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon. “Suspects will place hidden cameras in areas where it allows them to gather information about neighborhoods, and particular homeowners’ daily routines.”

Law enforcement agencies across the state have been seeing an uptick in hidden cameras being placed outside homes over the past several months. They’ve been discovered in Alhambra, Chino Hills , Garden Grove and Goleta , among other cities.

In September, three Colombian nationals were charged with allegedly planting a device outside a home in Temecula.

Authorities say if you discover a hidden camera near your home, you should contact local law enforcement immediately.

Other tips that can prevent you from becoming a victim include:

    • Never leave a hidden key outside your home.
    • If you spot a suspicious vehicle, write down the license plate and report it.
    • Always lock doors and windows when leaving, even for a short time.
    • Keep your front porch and exteriors well-lit.
    • Keep trees and bushes trimmed so they don’t become hiding spots for thieves.
    • Install home security cameras and monitor them frequently.
    • If you spot a broken window or open door, do not enter the home; call police immediately

This latest hidden camera discovery is currently under investigation by the Arcadia Police Department.
