California launched a $80 million rebate program Tuesday aimed at helping electrify multifamily buildings and homes statewide.

The program, announced by the California Energy Commission in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, invites low and moderate-income homeowners and multifamily building owners or agents to apply for rebates for energy-efficient upgrades, such as electric stoves and in-unit heat pumps.

Applications for rebates for multifamily properties in California are currently open. In the coming weeks, applications will open for single-family homes.

Gov. Newsom awards $131M to clear homeless encampments; Los Angeles gets $11.3M

More information on applications and guidelines can be found here.

Rebates for multifamily housing range from $700 to $8,000 per unit, with a maximum rebate of $14,000 depending on income level. Meanwhile, single family home rebates are between $4,000 and $8,000 depending on household income, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Low-income households — those earning 80% or less of the area median income — will be eligible for the higher rebates, while moderate-income families will receive lower rebate amounts.

The program is a part of the state’s broader effort to decarbonize its buildings , which primarily relay on fossil gas for temperature control and cooking, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make homes more resilient to climate change.

“California has led the way on saving people money while taking climate action. With the help of the Biden-Harris Administration and the historic Inflation Reduction Act, Californians can now get up to thousands of dollars to make the switch to energy efficient appliances,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “Saving money and fighting the climate crisis has never been easier.”
