A group of convenience store owners is helping fund support for a proposition that would result in longer sentences for some theft and drug crimes.

Local 7-Eleven franchisees on Thursday announced that they and the 7-Eleven corporation are collectively donating $1 million to support Proposition 36 , which would crack down on repeat thieves with longer sentences, including turning some misdemeanors into felony charges.

The convenience stores have been a prominent and regular target of flash-mob-style robberies, including one Tuesday night on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

“I’ve operated in this area for nearly 25 years and have seen the growth in crime rates firsthand,” franchisee Jawad Ursani said in a news release. “Prop 36 is not just about protecting our stores; it’s about preserving our dedication to the community and the customers that we serve. We need Prop 36 to ensure that businesses can operate without fear of crime and that Californians feel safe in their communities.”

Voters will consider the proposition on the Nov. 5 ballot.
