A man was arrested after he allegedly spray painted anti-Asian slurs onto Dave Min’s political campaign signs in Huntington Beach, authorities said.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department , two separate instances of vandalism on political signs for Congressional candidate and current State Sen. Dave Min (D-Irvine) were reported on Tuesday.
The first was reported at 11:45 a.m. in the area of Newland Street and Lamar Drive. There, several signs were vandalized with anti-Asian slurs spray painted on top.
A similar scene was reported just hours later, at about 2 p.m., in the area of Magnolia Street and Mediterranean Drive. Witnesses provided information to officers, and shortly after, they found and arrested 62-year-old Kevin Walker of Fountain Valley.
Walker was arrested on suspicion of vandalism. He’s believed to have acted alone, police said.
Min’s campaign posted a video showing the signs to its YouTube channel. The video, which contains depictions of hateful and racist language, can be found here .
In a statement, Min called the acts “unacceptable” and correlated the crimes with what he called “anti-Asian rhetoric” coming from the presidential campaign for former President Donald Trump.
“Hate of any kind, directed against anyone, is unacceptable. Full stop. But unfortunately, we have seen a sharp rise in hate in recent years due to the xenophobia and racism that have come to define Donald Trump’s MAGA movement,” Min said . “We’ve all seen and heard Trump’s anti-Asian rhetoric and his racist comments about Haitian immigrants. Locally, Orange County residents are being bombarded with Scott Baugh and MAGA Republican hit pieces baselessly claiming I want to create open borders because I’m the child of immigrants.”
Min connected the incident to pro-Trump events taking place in Huntington Beach, which commonly occur downtown on weekends.
Min, the son of a Korean immigrant, is running for Congress in California’s 47th Congressional District. The district covers Irvine, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach.
Min is running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Katie Porter, who unsuccessfully ran for one of California’s seats in the U.S. Senate earlier this year.
The battle between Min and the Republican Baugh is expected to be one of the more competitive races in November’s election cycle in Southern California.
