The mother of an infant that died last month in Porter Ranch has been charged with murder and felony assault, officials have announced.

Jalyn Simone Smith-Jermott, 21, was formally charged Friday, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said.

The baby’s father, 35-year-old Eric Shannon Johnson, has also been charged with one felony count of child abuse.

On Sept. 10, the three-month-old was found unresponsive in his bassinet at the couple’s home in the Porter Ranch neighborhood of L.A. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Gascón said.

“My heart goes out to the victim, who suffered unimaginable pain at the hands of those who were meant to provide love, safety, and protection,” Gascón said. “Children, especially babies, depend on their parents and loved ones for care and nurturing. It is a profound betrayal when that trust is shattered.”

Johnson, who was arraigned Monday, has pleaded not guilty. He is due back in court on Oct. 17. Smith-Jermott is scheduled to be arraigned next Monday. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Gascón said his team would prosecute the couple to the fullest extent of the law. “We owe it to the victim and to all children who deserve a safe and loving environment,” he concluded.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
