Beachgoers in Newport Beach were in awe Saturday night as bioluminescent waves came crashing onto shore.

Video sent to KTLA by Orange County Outdoors showed what appeared to be a typical night at the beach, but once the waves rose, a distinct glow was visible.

“The bioluminescent waves in Newport Beach [on Saturday night] were very bright,” Orange County Outdoors told KTLA. “We also saw some dolphins swimming around near the beach which were lighting up too.”

The video sent to KTLA was taken off I Street near Balboa Beach; according to O.C. Outdoors, after he posted the video to Instagram , many people rushed to the shore to get a look for themselves.

The appearance of the glowing waves comes days after much of America — including parts of California — was blanketed by a rare display of northern lights.

One commenter on O.C. Outdoors’ post noted the two rare natural events and simply said: “That’s amazing.”
