A broken water main has left a busy area of Los Angeles with serious flooding on city streets.

The flood, reported at 4:10 a.m. Monday, is most prominent on the 600 block of Formosa Avenue, a street adjacent to Melrose Avenue and just one block to the west of North La Brea Avenue. The area is oftentimes congested in the morning rush hour.

The immediate area is surrounded by homes and businesses. While it mostly affects that block of Formosa, some water was spilled onto Melrose. It’s unclear how that will affect traffic.

Images from the scene captured by KTLA photojournalist Darren Phan showed water building up around Fratelli Cafe on the corner of Formosa and Melrose.

As of 8:30 a.m., the 600 block of Formosa was roped off, and a crew was on site to make repairs. According to the L.A. Department of Water and Power, a repair isn’t expected until the evening.

LAWP said a few businesses on Melrose have experienced flooding and 40 residential services are affected. Water was shut off in the area just before 5:30 a.m.

The cause of the water main break was not immediately clear.

Darren Phan contributed to this report.
