    Employee shot at Santa Monica College; campuses closed

    Santa Monica College is closed Tuesday as police investigate an on-campus shooting that left an employee wounded.

    The shooting occurred at the SMC Center for Media and Design on Stewart Street around 9:15 p.m. Monday.

    Video Monday night showed the victim, who police said had been struck at least one time, being taken to an ambulance on a gurney.

    Santa Monica College confirmed the shooting occurred on campus and shared what they were told by police.

    “At this time, we have confirmed that one employee has been shot. Law enforcement is actively searching for a suspect,” the college posted on its website .

    The unidentified victim remained hospitalized in unknown condition Tuesday morning.

    Crime scene tape surrounded the area at 5 a.m. as authorities continued to investigate the incident.

    No motive for the shooting has been determined and no description of the suspect, who remains on the loose, was available.

    On-campus classes were canceled Tuesday due to the investigation. “All Santa Monica College campuses will be closed on Tuesday, October 15, 2024,” school officials posted.

    Students were urged to avoid the area and employees were asked to work from home if possible.

    Investigators asked that any witnesses come forward.
