Woman killed after getting restraining order against ex-boyfriend in Los Angeles County

A Bellflower woman was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend the same day she obtained a restraining order to keep him away from her and her son, who was also shot when the suspect burst into their apartment Tuesday night, authorities said.

Deputies responding to a shooting call on the 8500 block of Artesia Boulevard found a 26-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his hip around 11:30 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Hugo Reynaga said.

“As they’re speaking to him about what’s going on, they hear a single gunshot come from inside the apartment he just exited,” Reynaga said.

When deputies entered the apartment they found the wounded man’s mother, 54, and the suspect, 59, suffering from gunshot wounds to the head, according to Reynaga.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s son told investigators that he was in bed when the suspect, who does not live in the building, kicked in their apartment door. As he was getting out of bed, his bedroom door was opened and the suspect shot him, Reynaga said.

The 26-year-old, who is expected to survive, then heard his mother screaming and then a second gunshot. The final gunshot came as the man was talking to deputies outside.

Reynaga said the woman killed in the shooting had obtained a restraining order earlier Tuesday against the suspect, who “happens to be her ex-boyfriend.”

Since June, deputies had been to the apartment seven times for domestic violence-related calls involving the suspect.
