The Los Angeles man convicted of shooting and killing a 15-year-old in Long Beach in 2022 was reportedly sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Jose Bustamante Cardenas, 24, was convicted of manslaughter in August in the fatal shooting of Joshua Simmons in the Carmelitos Housing Project in April 2022, the Los Angeles Daily News reports .

Simmons was in discussions to buy Cardenas’ iPhone when Simmons suddenly tried to run with the device, prompting Cardenas to open fire at the fleeing teen.

The jury decided that Cardenas was provoked into shooting and reduced the original murder charge to manslaughter.

“Evidence during trial showed Simmons did not have the money to purchase the phone, nor was he armed,” the Daily News reported.

So it’s okay to shoot a unarmed kid who was running away, so if someone breaks into my residence and decides to run away after seeing me I have a right to shoot them if they’re no threat to me plus they are unarmed 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔was it legal for him to have a weapon in his possession
