    NM High School Football, Week 1

    EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) – The high school football season in New Mexico is officially underway. Games started on Friday night, Aug. 23 and continue Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24.

    Headlining Friday night’s slate of games was the 62nd all-time meeting between rivals Las Cruces High and Mayfield. It was the first time in the rivalry’s history that the two sides meet to begin a season.

    Las Cruces High went onto collect a 50-7 win over Mayfield in the non-district game. The player of the game was Las Cruces’ running back Daniel Amaro as he recorded three total touchdowns in the game.

    With the win, Las Cruces High extends its winning streak over Mayfield to nine games.

    The Centennial Hawks and Cleveland Storm were engaged in a heavyweight fight in Rio Rancho, NM. The two sides went back and forth all game, but it was the Hawks that came out with the 35-28 win in enemy territory. With the win, Centennial begins its season 1-0 after a victory over the New Mexico powerhouse.

    “The Battle of the Gap” rivalry game was also going down on Friday night. The Gadsden Panthers dominated the Chaparral Lobos for a 33-0 win.

    Over in Santa Teresa, the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors edged out Silver High, 15-14 on Friday night.
