Las Cruces woman held without bond after allegedly stabbing, killing man

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A 28-year-old woman was held without bond on Friday, Sep. 6, after being charged with first-degree murder and battery against a household member, according to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Las Cruces.

The Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office says Selena Carrillo, 28, will remain in the Doña Ana County Detention Center until her trial after allegedly beating her partner and fatally stabbing her partner’s brother last month.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to Buchanon Avenue for a disturbance with a possible stab victim.

Officers then found Michael Mata, 30, in the back bedroom suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries, according to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Mata’s sister, who was also present at the time, was transported to a local hospital for a laceration on her hand and visible bruising to her face and body, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Mata’s sister told police that she had been beaten by Carrillo. Police had been dispatched to multiple domestic incidents involving Carrillo and Mata’s sister in the past, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Witnesses at the scene told police that an individual was seen running away from the area and gave a description of the individual. Carrillo was then located, matching the description, and also had blood on her clothing and shoes with visible injuries to her hands.

The Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office says victims of any crime, including domestic or sexual violence, should call 911 in an emergency.
