Gadsden ISD: Decision to ban some colors based on DASO recommendation

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — The decision by Gadsden Independent School District to temporarily ban students from wearing some colors was based on guidance from the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO), the district said in a statement sent out to news media on Monday, Sept. 9.

Colors that have been banned are blue, red and purple, according to the district’s statement.

The ban will be in effect until further notice, the district said.

“While the majority of our students adhere to the school’s dress code and behavior expectations, the heightened visibility of gang-affiliated clothing outside the school prompted us to proactively address this concern. Our goal is to prevent any issues from escalating on campus and to maintain a safe environment for all students. To clarify, this decision is not a reflection of daily incidents at Gadsden High School or throughout the district,” the district said in a statement.

Here is the rest of the district’s statement:

“The fight that occurred between two students this morning (Monday) was the first altercation of the school year (at Gadsden High), and it stemmed from an incident at last Friday’s football game. However, in light of this situation and in partnership with local law enforcement, we felt it necessary to tighten dress code expectations to prevent any further issues. We are continually monitoring behavior trends and disciplinary matters to ensure that our schools remain safe spaces for learning. Our focus remains on addressing issues promptly and working closely with parents, students, and the community to promote a positive school culture.”

Here is what the district sent out to families in the Gadsden district:

“As we have noticed an increase in behavioral issues among students, we kindly request your assistance in monitoring your child’s clothing choices. Effective immediately, students are not permitted to wear the following colors: blue, red, or purple. Additionally, we ask that students avoid wearing items associated with gang affiliations, such as caps or bandanas in any color, and decorative belt buckles. We are working closely with the DASO, and they will be contacted if we suspect any gang-related involvement. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all students, and we are committed to ensuring a positive and secure learning environment for everyone.”
