EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is breaking the enrollment milestone record for new freshmen or first-time, doctoral and engineering students for the 2024 academic year.

Over 25,000 total students are attending UTEP, including 3,918 new freshmen for the 2024 academic year, according to UTEP in a news release.

“UTEP offers a great education at a price families can afford,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “Hard work and a degree from UTEP open the door to all kinds of opportunities.”

With over 25,000 students attending, this is the first time the university has hit the milestone since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to UTEP.

UTEP has seen a jump in new freshmen with over a two percent increase since 2023’s cohort, according to UTEP.

According to UTEP, the percentage of students continuing their studies at UTEP has also increased to 1.4 percent, totaling an 85.7 percent persistence rate.

“The increase in persistence rates is a clear indicator that our students are receiving the support they need to remain on track and complete their degrees,” said Amanda Vasquez-Vicario, vice president for Enrollment Management. “We’re proud of the hard work our students, staff, and faculty members have committed to achieve this result.”

UTEP’s College of Engineering has surpassed over 5,000 students in the program, with an increase of eight percent more than last year’s enrollment and 13.5 percent growth compared to five years ago, according to UTEP.

“Engineering growth is a testament to the quality of education we provide and the demand for STEM professionals in our region,” said Kenith Meissner, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering. “This enrollment milestone reflects our commitment to shaping the next generation of engineers and innovators who will drive progress and solve complex challenges both locally and globally.”

The university’s graduate programs have also seen a high increase in enrollment, with the doctoral program reaching an all-time high of 918 students.

A nearly 17 percent jump has been seen for master students compared to the Fall 2023 overall enrollment rate of 5.5 percent, according to the university.
