EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – For the past two seasons, NM State football has turned its season around following a win against New Mexico. The Aggies hope this streak continues heading into its competition against the Lobos on Saturday.

For the past three years, the Aggies have entered the matchup with a losing record when facing its in state rivals. In 2022 the Aggies entered the game with a 1-5 record, following a win against UNM the team went on a 5-1 run.

In 2023, the Aggies entered with match with a 1-2 record then embarking on a 8-3 season following a win against UNM.

The team finds themselves in a similar circumstance in 2024, heading into Saturday with a 1-3 record. After yet another tough start to the season, a win in week five of the season is vital as the Aggies look to turn things around once again.

“Both teams have a chance to go ahead and ignite their seasons,” said head coach Tony Sanchez. “For the last two years this has been that game that ignites us. If you look at where we fell and what we did after the game, its been something that really jump started us. Coach Mendenhall does a really great job and I know he’ll work on getting that program rolling, and we’re looking to get back on our feet. Last year after five games we were 2-3 and its easy to forget that. It should be a heck of a game, a heck of an atmosphere and we’re excited about it.”

The Rio Grande rivalry is one of the longest running rivalry games in the states history. This will mark the 114th edition of the game.

NMSU looks for its third consecutive win over UNM to tie for the longest win streak in the history of the match up since 2009-2011. Sanchez would become the seventh coach in program history to take a win against the Lobos in the first year at the head coaching position.

New Mexico is still on the hunt for its very first win of the season, heading to Las Cruses on with a 0-4 record. Kickoff from Aggie Memorial Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Saturday September 28th.
