LAS CRUCES, New Mexico ( KTSM )– New Mexico State University (NMSU) is looking at the next steps to restore and rebuild its Alumni Pond, which closed last August after losing a significant amount of water in a short amount of time.

In December of last year, the national engineering firm based in New Mexico, Molzen Corbin, conducted an evaluation on the pond.

According to the report, it’s recommended for the pond to be completely rebuilt. The repairs will include the pedestrian bridge as well.

The cost for this project is estimated to be between $1 million to $1.2 million.

NMSU leaders are currently evaluating their options including assessing the level of alumni and community support for restoration of the pond.

KTSM spoke to a few students on campus who say they hope for the pond to be restored.

“It makes me really sad because I really like the environment of the pond, and I haven’t even been able to visit,” Sabrina Teran, a senior at NMSU said.

The level of funding available will dictate how quickly the pond can be restored.
