    EPPD: Whataburger shooting kills 1, leads to DWI arrest

    EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) – A 45-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning, Oct. 5 for driving while intoxicated after a fatal shooting at a Whataburger in West El Paso left another man dead, according to the El Paso Police Department (EPPD).

    EPPD said on Oct. 5 officers from the Driving While Intoxicated Task Force responded to assist after a report had been made about a shooting in the parking lot of the Whataburger located at 650 Sunland Park Drive.

    The investigation determined Hector Manuel Lopez Jr., 45, was driving while intoxicated and was placed under arrest with a $5,000 bond, according to EPPD.

    EPPD also said Edgar Gabriel Lucero, 37, from Sunland Park, New Mexico, died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Police did not release any other details about the shooting, but said it continues to be investigated by its Crimes Against Persons Unit

    EPPD initially reported that the shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Friday, and said they arrested Lopez at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Saturday.
