    UTEP volleyball sweeps New Mexico State in first meeting of 2024 season

    EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — In the first Battle of I-10 meeting on the volleyball court of the 2024 season, UTEP beat New Mexico State (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) in straight sets at Memorial Gym on Tuesday night.

    It was UTEP’s first sweep of New Mexico State since the 2001 season (Nov. 21, 2001).

    UTEP’s Ema Uskokovic had 10 kills to lead the team in the contest. Sarah Pustahija had nine kills and Torrance Lovesee collected eight kills. Lovesee recorded three service aces, one of them being the match winner. Kaya Weaver and Danika Washington each tallied up seven blocks. Kalia Kohler and Mattie Gantt combined for 34 assists on the day. El Paso native Alyssa Sianez led the team in digs with nine in the contest.

    UTEP had 44 kills, 21 errors, on 108 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .213. UTEP beat NMSU in blocks, 14-8, in the match.

    NMSU’s Starr Williams led the team with 10 kills. Nellie Reese recorded a team-high 12 assists. Darian Markham had 11 digs and six kills for the Aggies.

    NMSU had 28 kills, 18 errors, and 89 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .112.

    With the win, UTEP improved to 15-2 on the season and 5-0 in Conference USA play. The Miners extended its winning streak to eight matches.

    With the loss, NMSU fell to 9-8 on the season and 3-2 in Conference USA play. NMSU’s three-match win streak was snapped on Tuesday.

    UP NEXT

    UTEP and New Mexico State will play each other again on Wednesday. Start time for the rematch is at 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
