EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — New Mexico State football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright is no longer employed by the university and no longer part of the program’s coaching staff.
New Mexico State University told KTSM on Friday morning.
Wright was let go by NMSU after the university completed its review into Wright’s controversial, decade-old posts on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Two weeks ago, Nick Coppola of the Las Cruces Sun-News reported that Wright’s X account contained “more than 150 social media posts containing derogatory language about Africans and African Americans, Hispanics, women and the LGBTQ+ community from more than 10 years ago when he was a student and football player at Tarleton State.”
The Las Cruces Sun-News’ report about Wright was released the night before the rivalry game between New Mexico State and New Mexico at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
That same night, New Mexico State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia told Las Cruces Sun-News, and later confirmed to KTSM, that Wright would not be with the team while the university reviews Wright’s posts.
Wright’s X account is still up, but his username has changed. The account now carries the handle of @CoachTyWright instead of @CoachWrightNMSU.
Wright missed NMSU’s game against New Mexico on Sept. 28. and its game at Jacksonville State on Oct. 9.
New Mexico State assistant head coach, run game coordinator, and offensive line coach Andrew Mitchell has been calling plays for the Aggies’ offense the last two games.
Wright is a native of Granbury, Texas and a graduate of Granbury High School. Wright played wide receiver at Tarleton State. Through his final semester as a student at Tarleton, Wright served as a student intern for the Tarleton State Texans’ football team.
In 2015, Wright became the wide receivers coach and video coordinator at Odessa Permian High School. He spent three seasons there (2015-2017).
In 2018, Wright served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at UT Permian Basin (NCAA DII).
After one year at UTPB, Wright served as an offensive graduate assistant at TCU from 2019 to 2021. While at TCU, Wright worked with Jerry Kill as both were members of then TCU head coach Gary Patterson’s staff.
In December 2021, Kill, who was named NMSU football’s 35th head coach in program history, hired Wright as the team’s special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.
After two seasons in that role, and as a result of Kill’s departure and the promotion of Tony Sanchez as head coach, Wright was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2024 season.
Wright was looked at as up-and-coming talent in the college coaching ranks. He earned an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Under 35 selection in December of 2023.
