    UTEP football picks up its first win of the Scotty Walden era

    EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – UTEP football picked up its first win of the season and its first win under Scotty Walden against FIU Wednesday night, 30-21.

    The Miners snap a nine game losing streak dating back to last year moving to 1-6 record on the 2024 season.

    The Miners were without its QB1 Cade McConnell who suffered a wrist injury during UTEP’s last game against WKU. Skyler Locklear made his first start at the quarterback position since September 21st. Locklear went 14-for-23 finishing with 161-yards, one interception, one rushing and one passing touchdown.

    UTEP had its best outing in terms of its rush game all season, collecting 221 yards on the ground on 46 carries. Jevon Jackson lead its run game accounting for 148 of those yards on 26 attempts. On the other side of the ball its rush defense held its opponent to a season low of 85-yards.

    The Miners start the second half of its season with a win, looking to use this momentum in its next five games on its schedule. UTEP will be back out on the grid iron Tuesday, Oct. 22 in Ruston, LA to take on the Bulldogs.
