La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) – The discovery of human remains near Highway 97 north of La Pine Monday afternoon has prompted a death investigation by Deschutes County sheriff’s detectives and the Oregon State Police Forensics Lab, the sheriff’s office confirmed late Tuesday.

Sergeant Jason Wall said the remains were found in a wooded area east of Highway 97 and north of State Recreation Road, near the county’s solid waste transfer station.

At this point, Wall said, the cause and manner of death are still under investigation. He also noted that it’s not being termed a suspicious death at this time. It's also not yet fully clear who discovered the remains and who reported it.

“We’re trying to more clearly ascertain how the information came to law enforcement,” Wall said.

It also has not been determined if the remains are those of a male or female, the sergeant said, adding, “It appears that the subject has been there for a while.”

Area residents and travelers had seen numerous law enforcement vehicles at the location, prompting concerns and questions.

Based on the information gathered to this point, Wall said, “I can advise there is no danger to the public.”
