Marx Bros Cafe to Close After Decades: Final Dinner on August 31
After decades in business, Marx Bros Cafe in Anchorage will soon be closing its doors for good. Owners Van Hale and Jack Amon have made the decision to retire. Governor Dunleavy signs timber, military bills into law at Tanana Valley State Fair

At an event in the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, the governor gathered with Interior legislators and local politicians to give the final passage to four pieces of legislation which made it through the state house and senate in the last legislative session.
Construction Report: Improvements to the Elliott Highway faces challenges with oversized trucks
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Roadwork is underway on the Elliott Highway as the Alaska Dept. of Transportation seeks to rehabilitate the road and improve drainage. The Elliot Highway may not be a roadway used by most interior residents but it’s certainly an important one; commonly utilized by tourists in the summer and year round for those moving goods to the north slope.
In Anchorage protest, woman’s family says she is convicted killer Brian Smith’s third victim
The family of a woman whose photos Anchorage police found on a convicted killer’s phone think she is yet another of his victims. A jury convicted Brian Steven Smith of murder in February for killing two Alaska Native women, and a judge in mid-July sentenced him to 226 years behind bars. In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors included photos from one of Smith’s cellphones showing another woman who appeared to be unconscious or dead, along with a forensic artist’s sketch of her.

From 1953 to 2021, the Legion state tournament featured a grand total of four 1-0 final scores in 69 years. Since then we’ve had four in the last 47 games, including Saturday’s nail bitter that saw the sixth-seeded South hold off the third-seeded Kenai Twins 1-0 on Day 1 of the state tournament at Mulcahy Stadium.
Dunleavy to sign four bills in Fairbanks on Monday
Gov. Mike Dunleavy will be at the Tanana Valley State Fair in Fairbanks on Monday for a bill signing ceremony, taking up four House bills that have Fairbanks-area sponsors. House Bill 104, sponsored by Rep. Mike Cronk, addresses the salvaging of insect-decayed wood from state forests. After an insect infestation, such as the occasional spruce bark beetle infestations, timber dies by the millions of board feet and can become a fire hazard. The legislation directs the Division of Forestry to focus on areas of commercially viable timber where fire dangers are high. The prioritization may provide fuel for biomass energy production and expansion.
Fairbanks’ airport robotic dog has a pronoun (she/her) and is a first for an American airport
The jokes are going to write themselves. The Fairbanks International Airport has started using a robotic dog to scare off birds and other wildlife that can pose a threat to aviation. The robot’s name is “Aurora” and the Alaska Department of Transportation refers to it as a “her” in the press release:
