WILLISTON, N.D. (KXNET) — The people of Williston have approved a measure to expand their elementary schools.

Residents mailed in their ballots and went to the polls to vote on a new school bond referendum.

Williston school leaders proposed a $35 million project to expand the elementary school space to allow for smaller class sizes, as well as purchase land to build a new school. School leaders are expecting their elementary enrollment to increase by around two thousand kids in the next ten years.

According to the Williston Basin School District 7’s official web page, the measure has passed by a vote of nearly 2 to 1. Official numbers won’t be made public until Tuesday, April 30, but the unofficial numbers are: 2379 for yes to 1228 for no, or 66% to 34%.

This put the measure well above the necessary 60% majority.

Now that this has passed, homeowners in Williston will have to pay an extra $44.64 in taxes, every year for every $100,000 in property value.
