MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Starting in late 2025, the City of Minot will be drawing its main water source from Lake Sakakawea.

City water officials say North Dakota’s biggest lake is a better source due to its abundance of water.

The move comes after years of diminishing groundwater caused by the lowering of aquifer levels in the Minot city wells.

This has led city water officials to reduce the amount of water that is drawn from those wells.

City water officials say that without this transition, there will be less water that neighbors could use.

“Where we were in the past able to produce about 14 million gallons per day and I think we are down to 12 million gallons per day of available water,” said Mark Paddock, the superintendent.

Lake Sakakawea will allow the City of Minot to create a surplus of water in the coming years in addition to its main water source.
