MANDAN, ND ( KXNET ) — Builders are working fast trying to get the new Mandan High School ready for students and teachers this month.

The new school has 330,0000 square feet of space and is three stories tall. Mandan has around 1,200 students enrolled this fall, but some parts of the building won’t be finished for a few more months, including the auditorium and the gym.

Superintendent Mike Bitz says the over $100 million project won’t be completely finished for the first day of class on August 28, but that all classes will be in-person and on time.

“We are going to be very functional,” Bitz stated. “We’ll have more usable square feet in this building than we did in our old building on day one. We’re going to meet all health and safety requirements. We’re going to have a few workarounds that we’re going to have to do, but it’s a great problem to have, and five to six months from now, it’s going to be a distant memory.”

Bitz says the school will have orientation for students on August 26 and 27. Parents will also be invited to walk around the building in the evening. They’ll also be taking a drone picture of the school to plan for the flow of traffic.
