BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — For the next 60 days, the boys in blue are finally asking you to patrol their performance.

How? Through the Bismarck Police Department’s accreditation process.

“So, it constantly keeps us evaluating what we’re doing,” said Bismarck Police Department Service Chief Dave Draovitch. “And it keeps us doing best practices, too. Things change over the years. It keeps us on our game is the way I like to look at it.”

This week, the Bismarck Police Department announced that the Accreditation Public Comment Portal has officially opened for the next two months as part of their work with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA.

CALEA is a national organization that provides law enforcement agencies and dispatch centers the ability to have their services assessed by an impartial board to ensure they’re meeting their best practices.

The Bismarck Police Department has been accredited since 1991, allowing the public to call or attend a public comments session to provide their feedback.

While the public can provide comments on the department’s performance at any time, the comments submitted within this 60-day window will be part of the accreditation process.

However, it was only last year that the Bismarck Police Department switched from a public comments session to an online portal, with the department’s service chief citing low attendance.

But even with the new portal, the department still says that the amount of comments they receive could be higher, only receiving a dozen or so.

“Just be honest with us,” said Draovitch. “We want to do the best that we possibly can for our citizens and that’s the whole goal of having or getting the comments.”

The portal can be accessed through here .
