MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — The countdown for the Souris Valley United Way’s Day of Caring has begun.

The Minot Literacy Volunteers are also hosting a book drive on the same day and it’s the first time it’s ever happened.

Minot Literacy Volunteers is teaming up with the SVUW this year for their Day of Caring to collect new or used reading material.

People can drop off their book donations or MLV volunteers can come to you to pick them up.

Angelina Edison, the executive director for Minot Literacy Volunteers, says their mission is to bring literacy to as many people as they can.

“We collect used lovingly used materials all year long and when we collect them and they start to pile up we sort through them and we sort through them for our book sale mainly and otherwise we sometimes use them with our clients we tutor,” said Edison.

The MLV’s tutoring program is called Literacy for Life and in the program, they work with people at any reading stage and any age.

They also work with area schools.

There are also programs for adults such as literacy instruction or help with improving their speaking skills.

“A lot of people come to us in our area where maybe they are English language learners and they maybe are very well educated or able to get jobs but that language barrier holds them back and so this is a quick immersion type of situation where we can sit down with them and beef up those skills,” said Edison.

MLV accepts donations all year long, but the book drive will take place Thursday at the Minot Adult Learning Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
